What time of day are lessons actually available in Australia?
This is the question that decides whether online lessons work for an Australian family, so here is the real answer rather than a reassuring one. Most of our teachers are in Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia, between five and nine hours behind eastern Australia. Their working evening — the slot a UK or Canadian family would take — lands in the small hours here and is not usable.
What works instead is the reverse: early morning Australian time, roughly 6am to 8am, which is late evening the day before for a teacher in Cairo or Karachi, and late afternoon, around 4pm to 6pm, which is their morning. Both are ordinary requests and both are well covered. Families with school children mostly take the before-school slot, which has a hidden advantage: a 30-minute lesson at 6.30am is done before the day can go wrong, and attendance holds far better than an evening slot competing with sport, homework and dinner.
The middle of the Australian day is the thin part of our schedule. If your only workable time is between about 9am and 3pm, say so before you book the trial and we will tell you honestly whether we can cover it rather than starting you with a teacher who cannot sustain the slot.
Does the state you live in change anything?
Only the clock, but the clock matters more here than in most countries. New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, South Australia and Tasmania move to daylight saving from October to April; Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not. For half the year Australia is running five different offsets, and a family in Brisbane and a family in Sydney who agreed the same lesson time in July are an hour apart in November.
We book slots in your own state's local time and carry the change on our side, so you keep the time you agreed rather than doing the arithmetic yourself. Perth families are the furthest from the eastern states and the closest to our teachers — a Perth evening lesson is a normal afternoon in Asia, which makes Western Australia the easiest state of all to schedule.
