Classes are 30 minutes and run five times a week — children usually join a circle capped at ten students, adults and anyone needing their own pace take the same lessons one-to-one. For learning to recite, an online one-to-one lesson is usually better, and the reason is arithmetic rather than technology. In a neighbourhood maktab or a weekend school, one teacher listens to twenty or thirty children in an hour, so each child reads aloud for two or three minutes and most mistakes pass uncorrected. In a one-to-one lesson the child recites for the whole thirty minutes and every error is caught the moment it happens. Corrected practice is what builds a reciter; time in the room is not.
What in-person teaching gives that a screen cannot is everything around the recitation — other Muslim children, the smell and sound of the masjid, a teacher who knows your family. Those matter, and we will not pretend otherwise. If a good local maktab is within reach, the strongest arrangement is both: the local class for community, short daily lessons at home for reading, Tajweed and memorisation.
The one thing that does genuinely change online is whether the teacher can see what the student sees. An ordinary video call cannot: the teacher holds a Mushaf to the camera and the student guesses which word is being corrected. For recitation it is usually better, because a one-to-one lesson gives the student thirty minutes of corrected reading where a class of twenty gives two or three. What a screen cannot give is community and the masjid environment. Where a good local maktab is reachable, most families do both.
