Muslims celebrate two Eids: Eid al-Fitr on 1 Shawwal, the day after Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha on 10 Dhul-Hijjah, during Hajj. The Sunnah of Eid includes bathing and wearing your best clothes, eating dates before the Eid al-Fitr prayer, paying zakat al-fitr, saying the takbir, praying the Eid prayer, going home by a different route, and enjoying the day.
Key takeaways
There are two Eids: Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal, after Ramadan) and Eid al-Adha (10 Dhul-Hijjah, during Hajj).
On Eid al-Fitr, eat dates before the prayer. On Eid al-Adha, wait and eat after it.
The Sunnah: bathe, dress well, pay zakat al-fitr, say the takbir, pray, return by a different route, greet people.
Everyone goes to the Eid gathering, girls and women included (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
Eid is meant to be enjoyed: “Every people has its Eid, and this is our Eid.” Fasting is not allowed on either Eid day.
Muslims celebrate two Eids. Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends. Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, during the Hajj. Both begin with a congregational prayer in the morning, and both have a Sunnah that is easy for a family to follow — bathing and dressing well, the takbir, the prayer, a different way home, and a day that is meant to be enjoyed. This page sets it out with the source for each, and has a free Eid morning checklist to print.
What is Eid, explained for kids?
Eid is a day of celebration that Allah gave the Muslims — two of them each year. When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came to Madinah, the people there had two days a year on which they played. He told them that Allah had given them two better days in their place: Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr (Abu Dawud and an-Nasa’i).
For a young child, each Eid can be tied to what came before it. Eid al-Fitr is the reward at the end of Ramadan: a whole month of fasting and trying, and then a day when fasting is not allowed and everyone celebrates. Eid al-Adha remembers the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to give up what he loved most for Allah, and it falls while the pilgrims are at Hajj. The story of Ibrahim for children is on our Prophet Ibrahim story for kids page.
This page covers these two Eids, which every school of Islam agrees on.

What is the Sunnah of Eid?
Eight things, all of which a family can do together. None of them is complicated, and a child can do nearly all of them. Each has its source beneath it.
1. Bathe, and wear your best clothes
A bath on the morning of Eid, and the best clothes in the house — they do not need to be new. For a child, laying out the Eid clothes the night before is half the excitement.
Source: Bathing before Eid is reported from companions such as Ibn Umar — al-Muwatta of Imam Malik; dressing well for Eid is shown in the report of Umar and the garment — Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
2. Eat dates before the prayer on Eid al-Fitr — but not on Eid al-Adha
On Eid al-Fitr, eat a few dates before leaving, in an odd number. On Eid al-Adha the Sunnah is the reverse: wait, and eat after the prayer. Children like the rule precisely because it flips.

3. Pay zakat al-fitr before the prayer
Zakat al-fitr is due for everyone in the household, children included, and must reach people before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. Let a child hand it over.
Source: Obligatory on the young and the old, before the prayer — Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
4. Say the takbir on the way
Allahu akbar, said aloud on the way to the prayer. It is the sound of Eid, and children take to it faster than to anything else on this list.

5. Take the whole family — girls and women too
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم told the Muslims to bring everyone out to the Eid gathering, including young girls, so that all of them would witness the good of the day.

6. Pray the Eid prayer
Two rak’ahs in congregation, followed by the khutbah. There is no adhan and no iqamah for it, which is worth telling a child in advance so they are not waiting for one.

7. Go one way, come back another
Return home by a different route from the one you came by. More streets, more people to greet.

8. Greet people, and enjoy the day
Companions greeted each other on Eid with Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum — “may Allah accept it from us and from you”. And Eid is meant to be enjoyed: play, visits and food are part of it, not a distraction from it.
Source: The greeting is reported from the companions, graded hasan by Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari; “every people has its Eid, and this is our Eid” — Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illa’llah, wa’llahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahi’l-hamd
“Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise.”

What happens on Eid al-Adha, and how do I explain the sacrifice?
On Eid al-Adha, families who are able sacrifice an animal and share its meat, remembering Ibrahim’s obedience. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم himself sacrificed two rams (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). Many families divide the meat between their own household, relatives and friends, and people in need.
The verse to give a child is the one that explains what the sacrifice is actually for: “Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you” (Quran 22:37). The animal is not the point; the obedience and the sharing are. Many families today arrange the sacrifice through a charity so the meat goes where it is most needed, and a child can be part of choosing where.
How do I make Eid special for my child?
Start the night before, give them a job, and keep the day about people. Laying out clothes, preparing the dates, and a child being the one who says the takbir first in the car do more than any decoration. Gifts and eidi — money given to children — are a custom in many families rather than a Sunnah with a set form, and a good one: it is worth letting a child give something away as well as receive.
And let it be fun. On one Eid, two girls were singing in the Prophet’s house and Abu Bakr objected; the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم told him, “Every people has its Eid, and this is our Eid” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). On another, he stood so that ‘Aishah could watch the Abyssinians’ display of play with spears for as long as she wanted. A child who remembers Eid as a joyful day is learning exactly what it was given for.
When is Eid in 2027?
Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected in the second week of March 2027, and Eid al-Adha 2027 in mid-May 2027. Both dates are confirmed by the moon sighting where you live, so the exact day can differ between countries. The months these days fall in are explained on our page on the Islamic months for kids, and the month before Eid al-Fitr is on Ramadan for kids.
About the sources on this page
Quran references are given by exact surah and verse. Hadith are given with the collection they are narrated in — Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi and others — rather than a hadith number, because numbering differs between printings. Where a report that families often hear is weak, we say so. Questions of ruling are given as the widely held position; for your own situation, ask your teacher or an imam you trust.

Bathing and wearing your best clothes, eating dates before the Eid al-Fitr prayer (and waiting until after the prayer on Eid al-Adha), paying zakat al-fitr, saying the takbir, praying the Eid prayer, returning home by a different route, and greeting people.
What is the difference between Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Fitr is on 1 Shawwal and marks the end of Ramadan, with zakat al-fitr paid before the prayer. Eid al-Adha is on 10 Dhul-Hijjah during Hajj, remembers Ibrahim's obedience, and includes the sacrifice for those able.
What do you eat before the Eid prayer?
On Eid al-Fitr the Sunnah is to eat a few dates, in an odd number, before going out (Sahih al-Bukhari). On Eid al-Adha the Sunnah is to wait and eat after the prayer (Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah).
What is the Eid greeting?
Companions greeted one another with Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum - may Allah accept it from us and from you. Eid Mubarak, meaning blessed Eid, is also widely used.
Can children go to the Eid prayer?
Yes. The Prophet told the Muslims to bring everyone out to the Eid gathering, including young girls, so they would witness the good of the day (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
Can you fast on Eid?
No. The Prophet forbade fasting on the day of Eid al-Fitr and the day of Eid al-Adha (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
How do I explain the Eid al-Adha sacrifice to a child?
Tell them it remembers Ibrahim's obedience to Allah, and give them Quran 22:37: the meat and blood do not reach Allah, but piety from you does. The sacrifice is about obedience and sharing, and the meat is shared with family and people in need.
