Learning the Quran in Ratnagiri
Ratnagiri is one of the most rural districts on the Konkan coast — only about 11% of its people live in towns. Its Muslim community, about 1.9 lakh people at the 2011 Census or roughly one in nine residents, is largely Konkani-speaking and spread through small coastal and river towns: Dapoli, Khed, Chiplun, Guhagar, Rajapur, Mandangad and Ratnagiri itself.
The Konkan's long connection to the Gulf shapes family life here. It is common for a father or an elder brother to be working in the Gulf while the children grow up with their mother and grandparents in the village. Keeping a child on a steady Quran routine in that household often depends on one busy adult.
An online lesson takes the travel and the timetable off that adult's shoulders. The teacher calls at the same time each day, the child recites on a synchronized Quran screen, and the parent abroad can read the teacher's progress notes on the parent dashboard. For a village far from the nearest madrasa, it also means the teacher's qualification does not depend on who happens to live nearby.
Which talukas of Ratnagiri do you cover?
All of them. Lessons are online, so a family in any of Ratnagiri district's 9 talukas — Ratnagiri, Sangameshwar, Lanja, Rajapur, Chiplun, Guhagar, Dapoli, Mandangad and Khed — gets the same teachers, the same courses and the same class times, in town or village.
| Taluka | What to know |
|---|---|
| Ratnagiri | District headquarters and port town. |
| Rajapur | Southern coastal taluka. |
| Chiplun | Largest town in the north of the district, on the Vashishti river. |
| Dapoli | Coastal taluka with many small Konkani Muslim villages. |
| Mandangad | Small, remote northern taluka. |
| Khed | Inland taluka on the Mumbai–Goa highway. |

Which language will the teacher speak?
Our teachers teach in Urdu, Hindi or English. We do not currently have Marathi-speaking teachers, and we would rather say so plainly. In practice, most children in Ratnagiri — whether they study in Urdu-, Marathi- or English-medium schools — follow simple Hindi or Urdu without difficulty. The Quran itself is taught in Arabic, letter by letter, with Tajweed.
From the Qaida to memorising the Quran
The path is the traditional maktab path, taught one student at a time: the Noorani Qaida, then reading the Quran with Tajweed, then — for those who want it — Hifz, with a daily sabaq, the recent portion revised as sabqi and older portions as manzil. Tafsir and Quranic Arabic are there for students who want to understand what they recite.
Classes for mothers and sisters
Many of the adults who learn with us are women — mothers who want to correct their own recitation before teaching their children, and sisters who never had the chance to learn Tajweed properly. Female teachers are available for every course. For women in Ratnagiri, a thirty-minute lesson at home fits around the day. See our female teachers.
How much do online Quran classes cost in Ratnagiri?
Two plans, each with five live 30-minute classes a week: the maktab circle, a small class of never more than ten students, at ₹1,000 a month — about ₹50 a class — and one-to-one with your own teacher at ₹5,000 a month. No registration fee, cancel any month, free trial first. Details on the pricing page.
Online classes or the local maktab?
If there is a good maktab near you in Ratnagiri, keep it — the community of a masjid class cannot be replaced. What an online lesson adds is personal time: in a local class of thirty children a child may recite for two minutes; online, a one-to-one student recites for thirty. Many families use both. Where there is no maktab nearby, or the timing does not work, an online maktab keeps the daily routine going.
