Learning the Quran in Sindhudurg
Sindhudurg is the least populous district in Maharashtra, with about 8.5 lakh people at the 2011 Census, and its Muslim community is small — about 26,000 people, around three in every hundred residents. Families are scattered across Kudal, Sawantwadi, Kankavli, Malvan, Vengurla and the coastal villages between them.
A small, spread-out community has a specific problem: there may simply be no organised Quran class within reach, or only one teacher for children of every age and level. Parents here often teach at home themselves, or send older children away for religious education.
Online lessons solve exactly that problem. A child in a village near Vengurla gets the same qualified teacher, the same structured Noorani Qaida and Tajweed course, and the same five classes a week as a child in a big city. Nothing about the lesson depends on how many Muslim families live nearby.
Which talukas of Sindhudurg do you cover?
All of them. Lessons are online, so a family in any of Sindhudurg district's 8 talukas — Kankavli, Vaibhavwadi, Devgad, Malvan, Sawantwadi, Kudal, Vengurla and Dodamarg — gets the same teachers, the same courses and the same class times, in town or village.
| Taluka | What to know |
|---|---|
| Kankavli | Northern taluka on the Mumbai–Goa highway. |
| Malvan | Coastal taluka, home of the Sindhudurg sea fort. |
| Sawantwadi | Former princely state town in the south. |
| Kudal | Central taluka on the Konkan Railway. |
| Vengurla | Southern coastal taluka. |

- Five classes a week begin, and you follow progress on the parent dashboard.
Urdu, Hindi or English — and what about Marathi?
Every teacher lists the languages they teach in, and for most families in Sindhudurg Urdu or Hindi is the natural fit. English works well for children in English-medium schools. We have no Marathi-speaking teachers at present; a Marathi-medium child usually follows a Hindi-speaking teacher easily, and the teacher adapts their pace. Tell us the student's comfort language and our office matches the teacher to it.
Qaida, Tajweed, Hifz and more
Every course runs in the same five-day rhythm. Young children in Sindhudurg usually begin with the Noorani Qaida; older students go into Tajweed or straight into the Hifz programme if they already read fluently. Adults often come for Tajweed, Tafsir or Quranic Arabic — see learning the Quran as an adult.
Female teachers, at home
Maktab Quran is founded and led by a female teacher, and the majority of our teachers are women. A girl in Kudal or a mother in Oros can learn with a woman teacher, in her own home, at a time that suits the family. Just tell the office when you contact us. Read more about our female Quran teachers.
Fees in rupees
The maktab circle costs ₹1,000 a month for five live classes a week in a group capped at ten, where every student recites and is corrected in every class. One-to-one costs ₹5,000 a month for the same five classes with a teacher of your own. Both include the parent dashboard. Fees are arranged month to month by email. See affordable Quran classes.
How online compares with a local class
A local maktab: community, but fixed times, travel, and a few minutes of personal recitation. The maktab circle online: up to ten students, every one recites every class, no travel. One-to-one online: the whole thirty minutes for one student, at times that can move. Families in Sindhudurg choose by what their week allows. Compare them in one-to-one vs group classes.
