Learning the Quran in Kolhapur
Kolhapur district's Muslim community — about 2.9 lakh people at the 2011 Census, one resident in fourteen — is spread between Kolhapur city (Karvir taluka), the textile city of Ichalkaranji, known as the 'Manchester of Maharashtra', and towns such as Kagal, Gadhinglaj, Shirol, Hatkanangale and Panhala.
Many Muslim families here speak Marathi at home as easily as Urdu, and children usually study in Marathi- or English-medium schools. Ichalkaranji's powerloom and processing units run on shifts, and a parent's working hours often decide whether a child reaches the evening class at all.
Online lessons take the travel out. The teacher speaks Urdu, Hindi or English — most Kolhapur children follow simple Hindi easily — and teaches the Quran in Arabic with proper Tajweed, five days a week, at a time the family chooses.
Which talukas of Kolhapur do you cover?
All of them. Lessons are online, so a family in any of Kolhapur district's 12 talukas — Karvir, Panhala, Shahuwadi, Kagal, Hatkanangale, Shirol, Radhanagari, Gaganbawada, Bhudargad, Gadhinglaj, Chandgad and Ajra — gets the same teachers, the same courses and the same class times, in town or village.
| Taluka | What to know |
|---|---|
| Karvir | Includes Kolhapur city. |
| Panhala | Hill fort taluka. |
| Kagal | Southern taluka towards Karnataka. |
| Hatkanangale | Includes the textile city of Ichalkaranji. |
| Shirol | Eastern taluka at the Krishna–Panchganga confluence. |
| Gadhinglaj | Southern town. |

What language are the classes taught in?
The Quran is read in Arabic, and the explanation is given in the student's language — Urdu, Hindi or English. For most families in Kolhapur, an Urdu- or Hindi-speaking teacher is the natural fit. None of our teachers teaches in Marathi at the moment, but children from Marathi-medium schools rarely have trouble following a Hindi-speaking teacher. Tell us what the student understands best.
Which course is right for my child?
It depends on where your child is today. Cannot read Arabic yet: the Noorani Qaida. Reads, but with mistakes: Tajweed. Reads well and wants to memorise: Hifz. Wants to understand: Tafsir or Quranic Arabic. You do not need to decide alone — the teacher assesses your child at the free trial. More on our Quran for kids page.
Can my daughter learn with a woman teacher?
Yes. When you contact us, say you want a female teacher and our office matches your daughter with one. Most of our teachers are women, so this is the easiest preference we get. Lessons are at home, on a phone, with no travel — which is often what makes regular classes possible for girls and women in Kolhapur. More on classes for women.
What does it cost a family in Kolhapur?
Most families start in the maktab circle at ₹1,000 a month — five live classes a week, never more than ten students. Families who want the whole lesson for one child choose one-to-one at ₹5,000 a month. There is no admission fee and you can stop any month. The first lesson is free. Compare them on one-to-one vs group classes.
Do we still need the masjid class?
That is your choice, and many Kolhapur families keep both. The masjid maktab gives a child friends, community and the feel of learning together. The online class gives steady, individual correction at a time that suits the family. If you are looking for a class near you first, our guide to finding a maktab near you explains where to ask.
