What a good online Quran teacher actually looks like
Since you're choosing your own teacher, it helps to know what to look for. In our experience it comes down to four things: sound recitation credentials (solid Tajweed, ideally with an Ijazah or formal study); a language you're comfortable in, because corrections you don't understand don't help; patience appropriate to the student — teaching a six-year-old and coaching an adult reciter are different skills; and consistency, because Quran progress is built on regular lessons, not occasional brilliant ones. What should you ask in the free trial lesson?
The trial is thirty minutes and most families spend it being polite. It is worth more than that — it is the only look you get at how this teacher works before you commit, and four questions will tell you almost everything.
"Where would you start me, and why?" A good teacher will have listened for a few minutes and be able to name a specific starting point — this stage of Qaida, this rule, this juz — and give a reason. Starting in the wrong place is the single most common reason students stall.
"What will you correct first?" You want one or two specific habits named, not "everything, gradually". Specific means they were listening.
"How will you keep me revising what I have already done?" Especially for memorisation. A teacher with no revision plan will get you through new pages fast and leave you unable to recite them a year later.
"What happens in a lesson when I am tired or unprepared?" The answer tells you how the other forty weeks will feel. Most students quit in a bad month, not a bad lesson.
Then watch one thing that is not a question: does the teacher correct you when you are nearly right? A teacher who lets a close-enough letter pass in a trial will let it pass every week, and you will be unlearning it in two years.
